If your daughter or son loves to perform, why settle for the run-of-the-mill summer camp? The Civic Theatre offers summer camps that explore all aspects of the theater, from acting to script writing to composing to directing to scenery to lighting and sound and more! Students can learn while becoming a triple threat — learning about acting, singing and dancing!
Students who may not be interested in the theater as a career still have fun and build self-esteem at theater camps. The Civic, as it is commonly known, also offers summer drama lessons, as well. But hurry! Registration ends on June 28 for summer camps and July 5 for summer lessons, and classes are limited to just 18 students. The deadline for the 2010 Summer Musical Theatre Camp is July 5.
The Civic offers programs for students of all ages. Check out the catalogs of offerings for children aged 6 to 11 and for teenagers. Students are divided into age groups. If you have Adobe Reader on your computer, you can download and print the registration form here. While the registration form is available online, you cannot apply online; you must print and mail the form or drop it by The Civic’s Box Office, which is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first of the week-long classes begins July 5. Both of the teen summer camps have final performances in the Suzanne D. Parish Theatre.
The Summer Musical Camp runs Aug. 2–13 and is open to children aged 9 to 18. At this year’s camp, students will learn how musicals are created from Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, who wrote and composed next season’s world premiere Sleepy Hollow, A Musical Tale. In addition, campers will learn acting, singing and dancing. The camp’s final performance is Aug. 14 in the Civic Auditorium.
Each week of summer lessons costs just $75. A second class tuition — whether for a sibling or an additional class for the same child — costs just $45! The teen summer camps cost $140. The summer musical camp runs $250.
The Civic offers scholarships for the summer camps, as well. You can download and print the scholarship form here. As with the registration form, while the scholarship form is available online, you cannot apply online; you must print and mail the form or drop it by The Civic’s Box Office.
The three plays that make up the Civic Youth Theatre’s offerings each season are completely performed by young people. The summer lessons and camps help groom students to participate in these amazing productions.
